Brightwood is a small, unincorporated community on US-26 between Sandy and Welches, spread along the Sandy and Salmon rivers. It has no commercial center — it's almost entirely cabins in the forest — but Welches restaurants and the Hoodland area are only a few minutes east.
Plan on about 45 minutes to the lifts at Mt. Hood Skibowl and Timberline via US-26, a little more to Mt. Hood Meadows on Highway 35. The drive climbs in elevation as you go east, so carry chains or traction tires in winter.
